Yoko's arsecrack.

Brought to my attention first on the City of Heroes forums, although I'm sure that this is probably from ANN's article on the matter, we now have ADV's The Anime Network's streaming service joining the Internet distribution fray.

Other blogs have already noted the primary draws: it's free (as in beer), it's subbed-only, and it has Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann as the chiefly promoted series of this venture, which has been said to be Awesome and Manly and all sorts of superlatives. I have yet to watch this series myself, although I have been Meaning To.

However, I find myself completely unable to recommend or even comment on this service. Not because of anything bad, as such, about the video stream or site, but entirely because of the following message:

Sorry guys and gals! This feature is only available to US and Canadian residents at the present time. Please check back soon as we continue to strive to provide you with the best anime available online for free. If you have additional questions, please check out our FAQ.

Regional licencing restrictions, you are my bane.

  1. I came across this the other day, and found the following:

Using the Flash 9 player plugin for Linux, in both Konqueror and Opera, the interface to the service simple flickers. And flickers. And flickers. Thankfully I have no seizure problems from such things…

In Firefox, the sponsor ad plays (very jagged streaming, with audio breaking the who way through), then when the episode should start–nothing.

So, it's for North Americans using Windows (and probably Mac).

  2. Well, I take that back. In Windows Vista, IE7, I get the same as Firefox/Linux, except it doesn't even load the advertisement. Hopefully they'll have this issue cleared up soon, and hopefully they're working on getting access for other regions.

I don't think it's Linux's fault either. Just load issues. Should've called Akamai, but ADV is too cheap.

  10. That's a boo-urns situation if I ever heard one. Sorry to hear that you didn't get a chance to check it out.

I think once I can get my hands on the DVD (when it eventually comes out about two or three months from now), I'll watch it subbed first, out of principle.
