Just keep this in mind -- a lot of people claim that, to be an "official" religion, it just has to show up on so many census records. Which is why "Jedi" is an official religion in Australia, and was under debate several years ago in Great Britain and America.

I suppose the other official prerequisite is tax-exempt status, but the former is easier to fudge with hordes of fans.

Haruhi is a false god. Yuki is the real saviour.

Convert to Yukiism, dear sinners, and you will achieve salvation.

I certainly wasn't suggesting that you were incorrect to discuss these religions, or any religions, with respect. And indeed the fact that religion has caused the amount of death and destruction that it has is no laughing matter. But the tenets of the religions themselves are pretty goofy. (I'm a Discordian myself, so I'm not trying to put down religions by saying this.)

@Kalium: Hail yes.

@rikchik: Well, I accept that religion is a rather serious matter for many. Considering that it's treated seriously enough in human history to cause a great deal of bloodshed, I figure I should probably treat the subject with as much respect as I can. Silly it may be, but the situations quickly cease to be amusing when the fighting starts.

@Mirrinus: Well, as mentioned, I'm not (yet) convinced that this is an actual Other akin to the Devil in the Abrahamic religions, in that they don't appear to be directly opposed to, say, the idea of having fun adventures with aliens/time-travellers/ESPers. I do note that the Sneering Bastard does appear to be fairly clearly opposed to Mikuru's faction of time-travellers, but we know little about the opposing ESPer and alien factions.

I may be incorrect, but I placed them in much the same league (perhaps more potent) as the Computer Club: occasionally at odds, but not quite the Big Baddie. This is, obviously, dependent on how the latest novels go with Sakaki et al.

"...I'm a staunch believer of Haruhiism, even though I don't go around preaching it and being an idiot/lunatic. If you've been following the novels you'll realise it isn't all nonsense/fantasy but has roots in physics and maths. So if Haruhiism is rooted by physics and maths then it can't be wrong. I will be presenting proof of the scientific aspect first, followed by discussion of the religious aspect. Since religion is mostly open ended, those who are offended or whatever should try to argue otherwise."

Actually, with the 7th novel and onwards, there may very well be an "other" in Haruhiism. Meh...

Some people take the tenets of their religions very seriously - and by seriously I mean humorlessly. They refuse to accept that there's anything silly about the idea of a big guy in the sky who can stop the sun, impregnate virgins, etc. I think it's healthier to admit that your religion is kind of silly, even if you then say "but I believe it anyway". Discordians, SubGenii, and now Haruhiists have a tougher time taking their religion humorlessly (though of course some manage to do it anyway) so they're kind of ahead of the curve on this issue.
