"..every time a cute girl with glasses decides to switch to contacts, I feel a tiny little twinge of sadness inside."

Yes, i need to agree.. Now allow me to burn Namco to ashes for going "No, we should turn Shion into our so-called generic hawt girl so we need to get rid of those glasses because it makes her look like a computer geek!". Damn you Namco and your stereotypical meganephobia. Shion died at the beginning of epII in my book, good thing (not really) that you'll get an alt outfit of her epI look in epIII.. Now allow me to burn the classic Grandia I too for calling Mio ugly.

[...] I’ll be the first to profess that my main moe obsession, if you may put it that way, are meganekkos, a.k.a ‘glasses girls’. Perhaps it’s something about their character that usually goes along with the glasses, the shy and quiet, or perhaps strong and silent personality that goes along with it. Perhaps it’s that air of intelligence that it conveys. Perhaps it’s that vulnerability that the glasses - and following lack thereof (”I forgot to reconstruct glasses.”) - conveys, the same way that there’s such a difference between Hair Up and Hair Down, there’s a difference between Glasses and Not Glasses. Perhaps it’s because I wear glasses. [...]

Personally the Sakura meganekko picture doesn't quite resonate with me, maybe because I'm used to non-glasses Sakura, or perhaps that her character doesn't quite fit the meganekko standard, no?

I think that meganekkos overlap a lot with the quiet moe that you posted about earlier, which is why I'm an admitted megaquietnekko addict ^^ The ones with glasses (because I'm tired of typing meganekko now) tend to be the ones that are shy, easily embarrassed, the protectable type (see Miyuki above, cue moe-ness), or maybe the strong and silent (Nagato's the obvious choice here). Both examples being incredibly adorable and awesome. And that's why I'm a glasses girl fan, at least, because 99% of the time you're on the road to someone really likable to a fanboy like me.

Sakura, being none of those but rather more of the Genki Girl, to blatantly use trope names, just doesn't seem to click with glasses. It's rare you see her that reserved, with that shy little smile.

Now, how about some Mai Kawasumi in glasses, no? :D
